'Tis the Season!

Happy Friday!

Whew! I don't know about y'all, but it has been a crazy three weeks on this end. Between college finals, holiday travel, and a sudden shutdown of the Internet, I just did not think we were going to make it! The terrific news is, Christmas is a time of overeating and napping with neither pursuit taking too much effort!

Speaking of Christmas, did you realize we are a mere 10 days from Christmas Eve? It's true! As wonderful as the Christmas season is, it can definitely be a bit daunting when trying to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. That's why I recommend you stop by the Davis & Blevins Gallery for many of your gift-giving needs! We have a wide variety of unique gifts for just about every age, from baby to baby boomer. We have candles, scarves, serving sets, and purses. We have jewelry, artwork, slippers, and children's toys. The list could go on and on, but instead of listening to me drone, why don't you stop by? We would love to help you find the perfect gift for everyone on your list.

We know it might be a bit of a drive for some, but there is no need to try to make it during the weekdays after work. We are open on Sundays! What a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon, visiting a great art gallery, purchasing wonderful gifts, and enjoying the one-of-a-kind atmosphere that is Saint Jo, Texas. Come see us anytime from 12-4 pm for a leisurely, yet productive, time!

Until Next Time,

Happy Almost Thanksgiving!

We hope everyone is enjoying this unseasonably warm weather as they prepare for the coming Turkey Day! The exhibit runs November 21st through December 30th with an opening reception on Saturday, November 24th from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

We hope you will all take advantage of our Black Friday deals and also mark your calendars for Donna's solo exhibit! We wish you all the happiest of Thanksgivings!

Where's Donna?

Hello everyone!

T-minus two weeks until Thanksgiving! We are thankful for the beautiful, though slightly erratic, weather we have been having as well as for all of the wonderful artists whose art we have the pleasure of displaying at the  Davis & Blevins Gallery. Speaking of artists, our lovely Donna Howell-Sickles has once again found herself in Arizona for the weekend. Take a look at what she has going on this time.

Thursday, November 8th- Today Donna took part in the Western Art Walk as a part of the Scottsdale Fall for the Arts Event. She spent her time at the Expressions Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Saturday, November 10th- This time we'll see Donna in action. She is taking part of the QUICK DRAW held at Main Street and Marshall Way, also in Scottsdale, Arizona, from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. Local, regional and national artists will be painting and sculpting in front of their live audience who will later have the opportunity to purchase the one-of-a-kind art.

Once again, if you find yourself in Arizona this weekend, we strongly suggest you make your way to Scottsdale to witness Donna at work! Have a great weekend!

Until Next Time,

Feature Artist: Christen Humphries

Hello all!

As October draws to a chilly close, we hope you are welcoming November with open arms and warm jackets! A short reminder before we dive into this weeks subject: Don't forget to stop by the Davis & Blevins Gallery to enjoy our latest show, Light on the Land. Moving right along, this blog is all about a wonderful artist who we are also grateful to have as a member of the Davis & Blevins Team, Christen Humphries.

If you've ever had the pleasure of dropping in on us, odds are you got a chance to chat with Christen. You remember her for her lovely smile and bubbly personality, and now you can also appreciate the beautiful work that she does. Taking the beauties of the world that surrounds her Oklahoma home as her subjects, Christen creates some of the most elegant yet understated pieces we have the privilege of showcasing. Below you can enjoy just a couple examples of the work Christen does (as seen on our website www.sjmainstreetgallery.com).

"Fantasia on a Theme of Roses I"
36x12

Sneak Peek: Light on the Land

Hello again!

We just wanted to give y'all a sneak peek at our latest show, Light on the Land. Below are a couple of the paintings that are currently on display in the Davis & Blevins Gallery during our opening receptions THIS WEEKEND.

Join us this weekend for the opening reception of “Light on the Land” an exhibit of landscapes by our gallery artists. You will enjoy an array of work from images of rolling Montana hills to the cool waters of Colorado rivers and East Texas dusky skies.

Ted Waddell's artwork is at once traditional and contemporary. Ennis Horses is a western scene of horses scattered in the Montana landscape, yet the his drawing and color washes are fluid expressions of the artist and his tools.

Plein-air painter Gay Faulkenberry transports the viewer to a cool Colorado river scene. The sounds of rushing water and smell of evergreens is palpable in her oil Taylor River Spillover.

Deborah Paris paints in the tradition of 19th Century artists with oil glazes that add a haunting depth unattainable by any other method. Spring's Promise exemplifies this time honored technique.

Join us won't you at our reception this weekend October 13th & 14th as we celebrate these and our other gallery artist as they show us the landscape through an artist's eye.

Light on the Land
Opening Reception
October 13th & 14th 1-6p each day

Feature Artist: Patricia Wolf

Happy Sunday, everyone!

It's hard to believe this is the beginning of the last full week of September, isn't it? The good news is, we're that much farther away from the scorching heat of August. The bad news is, we're that much closer to the miserable cold of January. Oh well, for now we have great weather, so let's turn our attention to the artist of the week, Patricia Wolf.

Patricia Wolf is a designer located in Smithville, Texas who is out to make Western Americana style available to the nation. All of Wolf's fabulous creations are 100% made in Texas, which means it's obviously the best that money can buy! We are very proud to say that our very own Davis & Blevins Gallery is the only place in North Texas where Wolf's products are sold! Make sure you stop by the check out the goodies, but until then, here is a photograph of some of the items we sell.

Items range in price from $24-$290

Those purses look pretty fabulous, ladies! So, grab your husbands, boyfriends, dads or whoever and run on down to Davis & Blevins Gallery before they're all gone! Have a great week!

Until Next Time,

Feature Artist: Doug Ricketts

Hello, all!

We hope you are enjoying the marvelously cooler weather we have been experiencing lately! It's really starting to seem like fall is on its way! We have recently sold one of my favorite pieces, which has prompted this celebratory blog about its artist, Doug Ricketts!

I swear to y'all, this man is after my own heart with the work he does. All of his pieces incorporate bits of old farm materials that were on the verge of being forgotten. Things like windmill blades, barn siding and farming tools are given new life in his unique and beautiful furniture. As a history fanatic, I truly appreciate this man's aims of preserving our wonderful history in such beautiful and usable ways. If that weren't enough, Ricketts includes information about where the recycled articles came from with every piece he creates, preserving the storied history of the piece as well as the piece itself.

Below are the two Doug Ricketts pieces that you may have seen in our Gallery!

"Red Mesa Tine"
Featuring pieces of a hay fork and old bailing wire
SOLD

"Last Quarter Tall Case"
Featuring reclaimed elevator tin, a harrow knife and jack gear
$2,800

Also in the photo:
"Horse Herd"
Charlie Ringers
Kinetic Sculpture
$800

As you can see, Ricketts pieces are not only historic and usable, but beautiful as well! We wish you a happy week!

The Beauty of Today

Happy Monday!

Since this is an art blog, and art is beautiful, I have something that has nothing to do with art but everything to do with beauty. The beauty I'm talking about today is the beauty that can be found in the knowledge that people are all fundamentally good at heart. In this world where all we see on the news is tragedy and the cruelty of some, it's easy to fall into thinking that most people must be bad. I feel like this is quickly spiraling into a sermon, so I'll just go ahead and wrap up before we all fall asleep! In short, don't doubt the goodness of your fellow man! Have a great week!

Until Next Time,

Upcoming Gallery Shows

Happy Monday, everyone!

Well, it's getting to be that time of year again...summer is over and now school is upon us! I'm sure many of you are getting things ready to send someone off to school, be it yourself, your kid, your grandkid, whoever. The bottom line is you're busy, so we'll keep this blog pretty short.

Insight Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas will be hosting a show with work from our owner, Donna Howell-Sickles, on September 7th from 6-8 p.m. While several new pieces will be displayed at that time, Donna will unfortunately not be in attendance because she will be in Sun Valley, Idaho for the show we spoke of in a previous blog. We know it will be a wonderful show and we hope you are all able to attend.

Later that month, Donna will be headed to Jackson Hole, Wyoming for it's annual show, "Miniatures and More." Held at the National Wildlife Museum, this show is not only for people to enjoy the talent of our beloved artist, but also serves as a funndraiser for the museum. It will occur the third weekend in September (14-16) during the town's fall festival, so it is sure to be a lot of fun. We will keep you posted with more detailed information as we get it.

That's about it as far as announcements go, however we do have a special treat for all of you! The pictures above are of two pieces Donna is currently working on, and I don't know about all of you but I personally love them and wish I had a pet deer just like them!  Have a great week!

Until Next Time,

The Davis & Blevins Gallery Team

As many of you are aware, not only was last weekend our opening reception for our show but it was also the weekend of the Saint Jo Rodeo. Needless to say, there was a lot going on in our small town this last weekend! If you weren't able to join us for the rodeo this year, we hope you will make it down for the rodeo weekend next year because it is always a lot of fun.

To turn back to our opening receptions of the latest show, Where We Live and Work (showing until the end of September), they were a HUGE success! We are so grateful to everyone who came out to show their support and to celebrate with us, we truly enjoyed getting to chat with all of you and showcase all of our wonderful Southwest artists. The picture above captures only a small amount of the amazing art we have on display now so make sure you come by and see it all for yourself!

In other news: Our owner, Donna Howell-Sickles, is soon to be featured in a show in Sun Valley, Idaho!

Artist Spotlight: Justin Gaffrey

Happy Thursday!

I hope everyone is fervently praying for a storm from the rainclouds on the horizon today because we definitely need it! While we wait for the flood, I want to share a bit about an artist whose work I fell in love with while on vacation in Florida earlier this month:

On vacation with my family in Seaside, Florida, I stumbled upon the works of Justin Gaffrey, a Walton County local with a painting style all his own. Though he does technically use paint, acrylic paint to be exact, his website is much more accurate when they describe him as someone who "sculpts with paint" rather than someone who simply paints. To really understand and appreciate the dynamic feel and textures of his work one has to see them in person, however, you can get an idea through the picture above. What really interested me about his paintings is the different aesthetics you experience just based on how you look at them. From a distance, they are beautifully vibrant landscapes but, up close, they are a mass of different textures, shades and shapes that one could study for hours and never feel bored. To put it simply, I am a fan of Justin Gaffrey!

Take a look at the rest of Justin's work and learn more about his style at www.justingaffrey.com and thanks for all of the rain prayers, it looks like they're being heard!

Until Next Time,

Have a Wonderful Day!

Hello all!

It seems like it's been forever since we last chatted! I apologize for the week-long silence, I was in Florida with my family. While I was there I did see some wonderful art, but more on that another day. Today I just wanted to give a quick reminder of the Davis & Blevins Gallery's hours:

Sunday 12- 4 p.m. (for the summer only)
Wednesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m.- 6 p.m.
Fridays and Saturdays 10 a.m.- 7 p.m.

We have so many beautiful items in our Gallery. From paintings to earrings, sculptures to t-shirts, greeting cards and more! There is something for everybody at the Davis & Blevins Gallery so please stop in and pay us a visit.

Seeing as how it is an absolutely beautiful day outside, I would like to end today's short post with a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow entitled, "A Psalm of Life."

A Psalm of Life
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

What the Heart of the Young Man Said to the Psalmist
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
"Life is but an empty dream!"
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
"Dust thou art, to dust returnest,"
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Finds us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,--act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing
Learn to labor and to wait.

Happy Birthday, America!

Hey there!

Well, we hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July yesterday, we know Saint Jo sure did. Though we are not exactly what people would call a "thriving metropolis," Saint Jo has always known how to celebrate the birth of our great nation. For those of you who weren't able to join us yesterday, here's a run down of everything that happened:

The festivities kicked off early with the 5th Annual Old Jo's Firecracker 5K beginning at 8 a.m. With such great weather for it, there isn't any wonder why we had the biggest turnout yet with approximately 80 people. In fact, so many people participated this year that we completely ran out of t-shirts! Talk about a wonderful problem! For those of you interested in joining the fun next year, it costs $15 per person if you register early or $20 if you sign up the day of. All proceeds from the race go towards community projects sponsored by the Saint Jo Chamber of Commerce.

Moving right on along, the Saint Jo Youth League held a 3 on 3 Sand Volleyball Tournament as well as a Horseshoe Pitch at the Boggess Park. Both events began at 9 a.m. and were a ton of fun to participate in, we're sure, though we were all still at the 5K. The entry fees were $45 per volleyball team and $10 per horseshoe pitcher and the winners of each contest were awarded cash prizes.

To help fight off the Texas heat, folks are invited to take part in the annual Ice Cream Freeze-Off, also held at the Boggess Park. Sponsored by the Saint Jo Chamber of Commerce and, this year, hosted by the Saint Jo Lions Club, the Freeze-Off is a great way for people to showcase their ingenuity and culinary skill in a delicious and kid-friendly way. After the tasting, which began at 8 p.m., everyone is asked to vote for their favorite flavor. Just before the fireworks the prizes are awarded for places first through third, with the awards being paid to the winner's favorite Montague County youth organization. First place this year went to the classic Homemade Vanilla, though we heard that the Cinnamon flavor was pretty delicious as well.

Rounding out the days festivities was the fireworks show put on by the Saint Jo Volunteer Fire Department. This year's show was collectively called the best yet, and we're sure it will only continue to get better with such a turnout as there was this year.

There is just nothing better than sitting out, surrounded by friends and neighbors, as you munch on a cool piece of watermelon, listen to some live music and watch as the night sky is lit with a dazzling display of whizzing and popping sparklers. It is times like those that we all count our blessings to be a part of this wonderful community and, on an even larger scale, of this great nation we all call home.
We hope to see you all at next year's celebrations!

Until next time,

The Davis and Blevins Gallery Team

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to the Davis and Blevins Gallery Blog! We are so excited to begin this new and exciting chapter in the Gallery's life, and we are thrilled to be sharing it with you. First, let me tell you a little bit about us:

Our Gallery is located on the historic square of beautiful Saint Jo, Texas, and was founded in 2010 by nationally renowned artist and Cowgirl Hall of Fame Honoree, Donna Howell-Sickles and her husband, John. Davis and Blevins is not only a showcase for Donna and many other nationally and locally renowned artists, but also a unique gift shop that sells a wide variety of beautiful items. We'll talk more about the Sickles and everything that can be found in the Gallery later but now I'd like to briefly introduce myself.

My name is Kate Clark and I am a native of Saint Jo currently attending the University of Mississippi for a degree in English. I love history and the literary arts so don't be surprised when they weasel their way into our blog! Speaking of which, now would be a great time to tell you why this blog exists.

With this blog we hope to not only bring more attention to the Gallery and all of the artists showcased in it, but we also hope to share our enthusiasm for the world of art in an enlightening, enriching and entertaining way (It seems we also have a passion for 'en' words, which we'd love to share with you as well).

Thanks again for coming to check out our blog, we hope you'll come back for more. Unitl next time!
