Where's Donna?

Happy Monday!

My goodness! This summer FLEW by, didn't it? Between summer ending and school starting, we completely understand if your head is still spinning because ours sure are!

Last week found our owner, Donna Howell-Sickles, in Midland, Texas for the opening of a museum displaying some of her work. Below is the information for the show (from museumsw.org).

Sculptors Who Paint:
Veryl Goodnight, Donna Howell-Sickles,
and Rosie SandiferAugust 16 – November 3, 2013Lissa Noël Wagner Wing

Sculptors Who Paint brings together both new and classic works from three female Western artists. Veryl Goodnight and Rosie Sandifer, both well-known sculptors, join Donna Howell-Sickles, known for her award-winning graphic work. In Sculptors Who Paint, these three artists’ preferred media stands alongside their newer forays into different media: Goodnight and Sandifer’s movement to painting and Howell-Sickles’ latest ventures into sculpture. Viewers experience a variety of landscapes and portraits of the West, with a unique focus on women artists and subjects.  This exhibition is made possible by the Pevehouse Family Foundation.

September 6th marks the beginning of another new show for Donna, My Window Faces West, put together by Altamira Fine Arts in Jackson, Wyoming. A reception will be held on September 6th from 5-8 pm. For more information on this show, please visit www.altamiraart.com and select "Exhibitions."

We hope you all have a wonderful week. Happy School Days!

Until Next Time,

Go Gyotaku!

Happy Monday!

We hope all of you are taking advantage of the absolutely gorgeous weather we've been having the last couple of days. In weather like this, very few things can force us at the Davis & Blevins Gallery back indoors. We can think of only one thing that makes us want to be indoors rather than out, and that's Gyotaku!

Gyotaku is a centuries old Japanese form of fish printing that our friend, gallery artist, and print maker Lynne Hubner will be demonstrating this weekend! Lynne will be giving a fish print (gyotaku) demo at Davis & Blevins Gallery on Saturday June 8th at 2 pm.

We are all very excited to learn about this fascinating art form from such a talented artist. We hope everyone is able to come out for Lynne Hubner's demonstration of Gyotaku, we're sure you won't be sorry!

Until Next Time,

Where's Donna?

Happy graduation season!

Well, it's officially that time of year again! The onslaught of graduation announcements, after-party invites, and Class of '13 memorabilia sales are upon us. We at Davis & Blevins would like to congratulate all of the Saint Jo graduates on their accomplishments over the last four years and wish them luck in their future endeavors.

Now, back to the initial question. Where is our owner, Donna Howell-Sickles? Why, she's in Steamboat Springs, Colorado! Alright, so she's not technically there yet, but that is where she's headed next week.

While in Steamboat Springs, Donna will be a part of 2 different events:

Her RETROSPECTIVE
Steamboat Art Museum
Steamboat Springs, CO

Public Reception

Donna Howell-Sickles: Drawing Mixed Media
Steamboat Art Museum
P.O. Box 883434
Steamboat Springs, CO 80477
(970) 870-1755

The first event, her Retrospective, is a show and reception taking place on Friday, June 7th. The second is a workshop in the same art museum. The workshop is on Saturday and Sunday, June 8th and 9th. For more information on either of Donna's events in Steamboat, please click on the links above.

If any of you need a break after the attack of high school graduations is over, we encourage you to make a trip up to the beautiful state of Colorado and take part in the festivities in Steamboat Springs! We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and congratulations, again, to all of the graduates!

Happy Anniversary to Us!

Hello!

My goodness, how time does fly! It's hard to believe we're in April 2013 already, isn't it? We here at Davis & Blevins love April in part because it's our anniversary (we also love the spring flowers and warmer weather)! We are so excited to be celebrating 3 years of sharing our love of art with all of you, and boy, do we have a humdinger of a party planned! To elaborate, check out this neat graphic we have:

Like all of our other get-togethers, this party will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 1-6 pm (this weekend, to be specific). As the ad says, on Sunday we are very excited to have some terrific wine from our friends at Arche Winery available for tasting!

We hope everyone near and far will stop by this weekend, April 13th and 14th, and help us celebrate 3 years. In the meantime, have a wonderful week and enjoy the sunshine!
Until Next Time,

The Davis & Blevins Gallery Team

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Hello!

We hope you all remembered to gear up in green this morning! If you forgot, you can always make a quick trip to Davis & Blevins Gallery for a little green something or other (*wink, wink*)!

Anyway,  we just wanted to drop a little note that our galleries will be closed on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013. As much as we would love to see all of you on the last day of March, we look forward to spending the day with our families, as we hope y'all get to.

Have a wonderful week and a happy St. Patty's Day!

Our New Space!

Happy Monday!

As you kick off this week, remember that someone you know (maybe even you!) is about to be on Spring Break! Isn't that a beautiful feeling? Anyway, our Valentine's Day weekend debut of the new space and new show went fabulously! Thank you to everyone who came out and helped us celebrate this big milestone for Davis & Blevins. If you haven't had the opportunity to partake of the beauty, we strongly encourage you to come by and see us! Anywho, until you can get there in person, here are a few photos from the event:

Two of Carly Allen-Martin's pieces in the new space.

One of our fabulous ads created by none other than John and Donna's daughter, Katie Small, and her graphic design company, Little Bee Creative.
(Sometimes it seems the amount of talent in that family shouldn't be legal!)

Gallery artist Lynne Hubner with owner/artist Donna standing in front of Hubner's work at the opening reception.

"I am attracted to the narrative capacity of abstract painting. Each of these paintings represents a complex character playing an autonomous role in the narration of my work. Every piece is a discussion directed at the viewer through the careful placement of line and juxtapositions of color. I am fascinated with the role every element plays in the integrity and character of a painting. The way a lyrical line insinuates a lightness of character or a harsh mark making insinuates a sense of grit is fascinating to me. The more I paint the more entranced I become with the complexity of color. To me, color is more infinite and imperious than any other form of communication. It is what moves me and contests me. Much like my interpretation of color, I want my work to be a constantly unfolding story that remains simultaneously delicate and commanding."
-Carly Allen-Martin on her work

Once again, we really encourage you to head on over to the Davis & Blevins Gallery to check out our new space and the wonderful art that fills it.

Until Next Time,

The Davis & Blevins Gallery Team

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hello!

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! We hope your day was full of love and chocolate and that you were able to enjoy all of the sweet movies that were playing on just about every channel (Overboard, anyone?)! In Gallery news, we are having a really fun exhibit opening this weekend full of absolutely stunning paintings by the lovely Carly Allen-Martin. Instead of spending a lot of mediocre words to try and capture the beauty this artist creates, I think I'll just let the pictures do the talking this week!

So, to recap: Carly Allen-Martin. "Sweetheart of a Gallery." February 16, 1-6 pm. Any questions? I really hope you will all show up in droves to meet with this amazing artist and her work. Have a terrific Valentine's Day and we hope to see you soon (aka Saturday)!

Until Next Time,

The Davis & Blevins Gallery Team

Well, Would Ya Look At That!

Hey There!

We're now about a month into the year 2013, and so far I'd say it's going pretty well, wouldn't you? Some pretty exciting things are happening with the Davis & Blevins Gallery in the coming month of February. Take a look below to get a bit of an idea!

The Scottsdale Artists' School is holding many workshops in the coming month, and Donna Howell-Sickles will be teaching one of them!  Donna will be holding a weekend workshop on drawing the female figure on February 22-24. If you find yourself in the area the last weekend of February, I encourage you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn from the best! All levels are welcome, though some drawing experience is encouraged.

Back to the beginning of the month: This Friday, February 1st, Donna is having a show at the National Ranching Heritage Center on the Texas Tech campus. This show is unique in that it is a retrospective look at Donna's career thus far. A whopping 40 years of art will be covered, though not every single piece will be shown (can you imagine how many walls that place would need?!), it is sure to be a really great look into the lifework thus far of Donna Howell-Sickles. She'll be giving a talk on Friday at 7 pm and the show begins the next day. I hope you will all attend this rare and exciting event! To hold you over until then, here are a few samples of Donna's works.

"Like a Moth To a Flame"

 "Right On Target"

"Postcard Cowgirl" (one of her earlier works)

This postcard was an early source of inspiration for Donna

So, make sure you clear your schedules for the first and last weekends of February, folks! Have a great week!

Until Next Time,

The Davis & Blevins Gallery Team

A Furniture Fascination!

Hello everyone!

We hope you are all having a wonderfully sunny Sunday! As some of you may have learned from our recent Facebook posts and newsletter emails, the Davis & Blevins Gallery has recently acquired some wonderful furniture pieces from the very talented Doug Ricketts. Each one of these pieces has inspired in me a deep loathing of the utter lack of floorspace in my tiny apartment, so, alas, I find myself beholden upon all of you to remove these temptations from my sight! Two pieces in particular have caught my jealous eye:

This piece seems to be so versatile in my mind. It could serve as a buffet in your dining room, the entertainment center in your living room, or as the perfect table in your entryway. So many beautiful options!
Dreyfoos Entertainment Console
Doug Ricketts
Wood, blackened steel, milk pain, salvaged security glass, hay dump-rake pick up rods and hardware
30 1/4" h x 72" w x 22 1/2" d
$4,200

Maybe it's just me, but isn't this piece screaming for an old fashioned telephone? While I see this as the perfect telephone table, it could also serve as a great place to put on your shoes before you head out the door.
Caprock Canyon Bench II
Doug Ricketts
Red Oak, steel, Baltic birch plywood
27 1/4" h x 37 1/2" w x 16" d
$1,850

Please make sure you come by soon to see these, and other, excellent pieces by Doug Ricketts!

Until Next Time,

The Davis & Blevins Gallery Team

Hello, 2013!

Hello!

We hope y'all had fun ringing in the New Year! So far, 2013 has been pretty spectacular for us here at the Davis & Blevins Gallery, and we look forward to the many exciting months to come.  Just a couple reminders/announcements for you today:

If you have not been by to see all of Donna Howell-Sickles' new works on display for her show, you really should make the trek! She's got wonderful pieces that appeal to just about everyone who sees them! Right now I'm really liking "Like A Moth To A Flame" because it appears as if the fruit is coming right at you (not to mention the dog holding what could possibly be a stick of lit dynamite)! Make sure you head on over soon before they all disappear!

"Like A Moth To A Flame"
Mixed Media on Paper
40"x60"
$9600

For those of you who have seen the construction or heard some rumors, I am happy to inform you that Donna and John are close to completing a new gallery and studio space right next door to Davis & Blevins!"The Frie Building," as the space is locally known, was separated and sold as two spaces years ago. Now, thanks to John and Donna's vision, the Frie Building is whole once more!

I'd love to tell you more about this historic building, but unfortunately, I have not been able to contact the people who know the most about it. All I know is what the building tells me: H.C. Frie owned it in 1889 (its made into the top of the building front). I also know that some hundred year old linoleum flooring was discovered during the renovation and will be used in Donna's upstairs studio. If you would like to know more about this historic building, please stop by and ask John or Donna, or you can email us at info@sjmainstreetgallery.com.

We wish you a safe and happy week!

Until Next Time,

The Davis & Blevins Gallery Team
